After watching the final scene, my emotional response to Nora and Torvald has changed.
After watching the live play, I feel more sympathetic towards Torvald and less towards Nora. Originally I felt more sympathetic towards Nora but after actually watching her break Torvald's heart and the loud emotions they both felt, my opinion changed. I'm sympathetic to Torvald because he had no idea what was coming and he had no idea how to react. Nora had been thinking about this moment and how she should react, so it's unfair to Torvald how he was blind sighted by this. I also feel sympathetic to Torvald because Nora obviously doesn't love or care for her children as much as she should. She ruined her and Torvald's family. I don't believe it was fair to Torvald for Nora to do that to him while he was drunk, while it was late at night when judgement is cloudy, and so suddenly. His heart was broken ruthlessly and that is why I feel more sympathetic towards Torvald after watching the final scene.

I too felt more sympathetic towards Torvald after watching the film. I felt as though he did not know, or have an understanding of what was happening, and that Nora didn't give him much of a chance to understand.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Nora isn't considering the harmful effect it will have on her children by abandoning them. I noticed Nora disagrees with Torvald on so many things, yet she agrees that she shouldn't raise the children (his reason being that her dishonesty is infectious). She challenges his beliefs, but not that one for some reason; and yet she believes he would be better suited to raise the children, after calling him out on all his faults. His beliefs will become ingrained in them as the grow and it's careless of her not to consider that. Ultimately I think she's right on many things, but as far as this I think she should've rethought it. Good point with him being drunk too! It's possible that he overreacted more than he would have, had he not been drunk, but it's possible that the author wrote him knowing he would have responded so harshly drunk or not. Hard to know. Great insights! This allowed me to articulate some thoughts I had more clearly! Thank you
ReplyDeleteI agree that we should feel sympathetic for Torvald as Nora left without much explanation or time to process the situation, but I think Nora was confused as to where her own life was going and rather than staying and figuring things out, she decided to leave to help clear her mind and focus on bettering herself in order to better her family in the future. I think she did care for her children, but did not want to have them see the conflict between her and Torvald.
